IN MANY WAYS, OUR VERSION OF THE ARCHIES IS THE MOST STABLE CONFIGURATION. THE FIVE MOST FAMOUS MEMBERS FIRST CAME TOGETHER IN 1988. THEY WERE ALL COLLEGE STUDENTS, BUT SUCCESS PUT ACADEMICS ON HOLD FOR A WHILE. AFTER SCORING A GIGANTIC HIT SINGLE WITH "SUGAR, SUGAR" AND CHARTING A FEW MORE TIMES, THEY BROKE UP.

EIGHT YEARS LATER, THEY RESURFACED AS THE FLAGSHIP ACT OF AN INDIE LABEL OWNED BY ARCHIE ANDREWS AND HIS WIFE VERONICA. HAVING EVOLVED INTO NEW ENGLAND'S ANSWER TO CALIFORNIA LEGENDS FLEETWOOD MAC, THE ARCHIES BECAME A HIT RECORD JUGGERNAUT BETWEEN 2002 AND 2014. THEN THEY TOOK A THIRTEEN YEAR HIATUS (WHICH THEY'RE CURRENTLY STILL ON).

Jason Blossom's media conglomerate Republic International no longer

exists. Its successor, Republic USA, now controls the Archie Records

catalog. The Archies regroup (sans Reggie Mantle + Trevor Santiago),

and search for a new record label; but per a court case decided in

Jason's favor, they're obligated to give Republic a certain number

of new masters. When they book Sabrina's Witch Queen studios for

the first session, they find their former producer Ralfi Chingas

and his Transsexual protegée there working on another project.

Archie and Veronica decide to give Jonniemae a shot at producing

The Archies! The first Fuentes master is a fabulous remake of Scott

McKenzie's anthemic "San Francisco (Flowers In Your Hair)." It's

one of eight strong single candidates tracked @ this Boston date.

Sales will raise funds for homeless relief after a devastating 2029

terrorist attack! Featuring lead vocals by Kevin Keller, "San

Francisco" b/w "Sweet Savior" will score a long-overdue second

North-American chart topper.

The Archies intend their legendary aborted album tribute to

Carole King as the first recording they deliver to Republic

USA. Demos cut for that album back in 2001 are now lost, so

the band overdubs session tapes retrieved from engineer Alan

Mayberry's sound archive. Sessions move from Boston to Pelham

NY and a new location for Archie Sound Studios (ASS). Jonniemae

remains in the producer role. Kevin Keller was only a background

singer @ the demo sessions but he takes a very prominent role

here: Kelly "doubles" Reggie's lead voice, sings new harmonies

for Jughead's leads (tracked @ the Witch Queen sessions in early

January), re-imagines "Don't Bring Me Down" as a duet with Juggy

and cuts a brand new lead vocal for "Yours Until Tomorrow"

- a ballad that was originally demo'd by Veronica. As a single,

this rendition will top the Australian charts in 2034. In order to

fully distinguish this collection from bootlegs, an extra

Carole King number is added to the track list: "Goin' Back",

interpreted by Betty at her most passionate. The music press

reports extensively on the belated completion of an LP to be titled

SO MUCH LOVE, and excitement among Archies fans climbs to fever-pitch!

Unfortunately, they're in for a massive letdown, and so is the group.

Republic CEO Alexandra Cabot (who'd been Archie Records' first A & R Chief)

decides to shelve the finished album. Xandi feels that the raw session tapes

are more faithful to Carole King's music direction than the overdub master,

and therefore more commercial; she markets them instead under the title

THE GOFFIN-KING DEMOS. Archie and Veronica are livid, especially after her DEMOS

collection tanks! Rejecting what even Xandi agrees is some of The Archies'

finest new music will cost her: Two of their three final albums will carry

another label's logo. "While the group does owe Republic USA several

albums, they retain the right to have new masters marketed elsewhere!"

So decrees the formidable Marcy Lodge-Katzenbaum, The Andrews'

longtime attorney.

In December of 2030, The Archies will sign with Discos

Fuentes, former South-American distributor for the Archie

label group. They do so at the urging of Ralfi Chingas, who's

been a Fuentes A & R executive ever since he stopped

supervising their record dates. With one exception, all of

their new studio recordings will be Fuentes masters. Also at Ralfi's

urging, Jonniemae hires on as an A & R staffer; subsequently,

she finds herself too busy to work with The Archies! Veronica

asks Ralfi to return to the production helm but he refuses.

She takes his suggestion to start producing again herself, in

collaboration with Jughead and Kelly. Guest vocalist Toni Topaz

(now Jughead's wife) holds forth on a Caribbean-tinged

remake of Todd Rundgren's "I Saw The Light." Archie delivers

"Gingerbread Man" in a voice that sounds more raspy than

ever before; critics will praise his "grungy" new singing style,

clueless about the serious problem it masks. He duets

with Roni on "Just You", which will be heard in the 2031

Willow Smith film I Killed Nobody But My Husband! A solo

lead by Betty Cooper is overdubbed onto the Archie Records

single master of "If We Both Hold On". The original version,

featuring Betty, her ex-husband Juggy Jones and Archie, is

retained in the Republic USA archives. Betty also sings lead

on "Burnin' Desire" which will appear on the flipside of

"Whole World Shakin'," a belated Archies hit in the year 2125.

These sessions are the first held @ Archie Sound

Studios in its new location! The original studio

was sold in 2021 and demolished two years later.

The Archies intend this album to be a celebration

of legendary '60s vocal group Jay + The Americans.

A revival of Gary Lewis + The Playboys' "Just My Style"

(first attempted in Boston the previous year) is

is intended for a non-album single but Discos

Fuentes won't release it until early 2035.

All tracks recorded at these sessions feature lead

vocals by Kevin Keller except "I'll Remember You",
a trio effort by Kelly, Juggy and Veronica; "Tonight",

a duet by Kelly and Juggy; "Some Enchanted Evening"

for which ensemble lead vocals will be dubbed later;

and "He Cried", a Roni solo. This date features a

session bassist: Nantzi Saroyan, the daughter of Mimi

Saroyan, who was a member of the now-disbanded

girl group The Vixens. Betty (now married to

CNN celebrity journalist Anderson Cooper ) will not
attend these dates.

at a separate location. However, Archie's strenuous objections

change her mind. Betty travels to Pelham with music director

SonSeri Kennedy and her second husband, Anderson Cooper,

for studio tracking sessions. Though annoyed at first, Betty will later

concede that recording with the group again was the right decision.

She sings magnificent leas on all the songs listed! Roni Lodge-

Andrews, who has always despised Betty's famous husband (and

the feeling is mutual) will choose not to attend. At Betty's request,

the steel guitarist on this date is Long Tall Wisdom, a member of

the Country band Katz + The Fiddles.

a session for backing tracks, The Archies record their ensemble

lead vocal for "Some Enchanted Evening" live. After completing
their performance in one mind-blowing take, Archie, Betty, Veronica, Juggy and Kelly receive a standing ovation from the assembled singers and musicians! The Rock Chorale is made up of students from Riverdale Music Academy, an élite music school that The Andrews founded in 2017. Orchestra conductor Fox Printemps is an Academy honor student whom The Archies invite to work with them on their final projects. Foxie is so thrilled, she wets her pants while conducting the symphony!

After "Sugar, Sugar" in 1989, there were no

major Archies hits in India for 40 years! The

2033 compilation ARCHIE SUPERSTAR will change

that in a big way: Not only will the single "Girl" (overdubbed

in Bengali) and album (featuring selections in nine

languages) land in the South Asian Top Ten, but the band's

back catalog will also spring to life. HITS OF THE SIXTIES,

VOLUMES ONE + TWO, and both volumes of ARCHIE

COUNTRY belatedly win Indian Gold Records, and even

the failed Jazz album JUMP BACK, HONEY! charts high.

This is a very early manifestation of Archiemania,

which won't reach full bloom until the 2070s. ARCHIE

SUPERSTAR is one of five albums that satisfy The

Archies' legal obligation to the Republic label; it

marks the last time the band works with Hong Kong-

based producer Barclay Singh who supervised both

their ARCHIE IN JAPAN EP and FILET OF SEOUL concert

album. Neither Reggie nor Trevor attend these dates

in Mumbai, but Juggy's wife Toni Topaz sings guest lead

vocals on "A-R-C-H-I-E" and makes Blue-Eyed Soul a trio

for the Rascals Medley. She'll accompany The Archies

on their Farewell World Tour.

during the European leg of that tour; it becomes notorious
due to the eccentric, offensive and sometimes frightening
studio behavior of producer Max Manischevitz! Among other
outrageous things, Mad Max exposes himself to Betty + Veronica.
When an outraged Toni Topaz vents her wrath on the pervert,

one track is left unfinished: "Good Lovin' Man" won't be completed

until November of 2032."Who Am I?" will be The Archies' last Top Ten single,

belatedly released in September of 2145. The German version of "Voodoo

Doll" is used as a theme song for Radio Luxembourg's "Midnight Voodoo"

radio program; Kevin Keller sings lead on both versions, and Toni

is prominent on background harmony. Neither Reggie Mantle nor

Trevor Santiago attend this session.

popularity of The Archies' Farewell World Tour!

However, mindful of the label's fraught past with

the group, they'll seek to coordinate new catalog

releases with Archie and Veronica. In the summer

of 2032, The Andrews give Alan Mayberry permission

to work with Republic on a special reissue project.

He conceives a two-record set designed to focus

attention on what he feels are the two most under-

rated Archies albums: 2006's GET IT ON TODAY!

and 2013's JUMP BACK, HONEY! Cherry-picking

20 songs from those LPs, Alan M remixes them

to sound even more "retro" than they did originally

(evoking the Psychedelic and Swing eras, respectively.)

GOD BLESS ROCK + ROLL is another Archies album

that's legally owed to Republic; a 2035 compilation

titled ARCHIE'S GREATEST COUNTRY HITS will

complete the quota.

The Archies will contract to cut just one studio LP for Discos Fuentes; but after THE GRASS WILL SING FOR YOU becomes a blockbuster, the label all but demands a follow-up! Reluctantly, the band agrees to deliver another LP, but with conditions: "It can't be another multi-disc set; it can't take a long time to finish; it can't be another ballad showcase; we won't produce it; and we won't do any personal appearances to promote the release!" Among themselves, The Archies agree: "It needs to be something special!" Throwing ideas around, Jughead will recall the group's aborted WHOLE WORLD SHAKIN' EP from 2012. "So what if we re-imagine it as an LP?", he proposes. "Every song was going to have the word 'shake' in the title," Archie scoffs. "Do you really think that concept can work as an album?" Betty will also be skeptical: "That's just an ordinary theme record!" However, Kelly likes the concept. "I know some great songs we can do," he says, "but how can we make them stand out?" Veronica has the solution: "Let's track the album live-in-studio with an audience of invitation-only guests!" She gets the idea from a 1959 Cliff Richard album which was recorded that way. Upon learning that Rod Mack and Dilton Doiley Briseño have forged a production partnership, The Archies hire their old friends to helm the unique project. Sixteen dance rockers are captured on an early November evening at Falcon Studios; there'll be no celebrities among the guests, just longtime members of the Archies Fan Club who enjoy the proceedings immensely! But although Fuentes executives will have pleaded for another album, they'll shelve WHOLE WORLD SHAKIN' - much to the annoyance of everyone involved! In the year 2125, the company will market a compilation under the same title but it won't feature any of these tracks. Over a century will pass before the public finally gets to hear the last Archies studio album!

These four songs are tracked simultaneously in El Paso

(Dilton Doiley Briseño with Betty, Reggie and

Trevor) and Pelham (Rod Mack with the rest of the group).

Trevor leads the first two selections and Reggie takes over

on the last two. Trev sings alone on the third version

of "Whole World Shakin'"(destined for belated

hit single status in the year 2125), but his

original 2012 duet with Archie is retained

in the Republic archives. Reg will argue that

"Good Lovin' Man" is the most commercial side,

and he feels vindicated when Discos Fuentes

rejects "I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight?" as

the single. In the year 2039, he gets the

group's permission to overdub Spanish vocals.

Credited to GINO EL HUAPANGUERO con LOS
ARCHIES, "Mea Culpa/Good Lovin' Man" will score a
Pan-American solo hit for him. (His original English vocal
won't be heard until 2088.) These November sessions

are early collaborations between Dilton and Rod, who despite

working many Archie Records sessions in various capacities

hadn't met face-to-face until the GRASS WILL SING FOR YOU

record dates. They'll become a highly successful production

team as well as partners-in-life!

All selections were written by Laura Nyro. These instrumental tracks (pre-recordings for an upcoming TV special) are actually not instrumentals; they feature guide vocals by Olguita aka Olga San Quentín. "Time And Love", "California Shoeshine Boys" and "Save The Country" are duets with her husband, Gino el Huapanguero (known as Reggie Mantle north of the Mexican border). Usually, guide vocals are erased but Dilton is so dazzled by these performances, he decides to preserve them. Hardly any of Olga's vocals will be heard on TV, but The Archies will parrot her superb phrasing as they sing live for a studio audience. Discos Fuentes covets the chance to release the special on a soundtrack album but Veronica blocks it - revenge for having rejected the WHOLE WORLD SHAKIN' set! Because of her refusal, legal uncertainty will surround its eventual release by the Vox label in 2060. Fuentes/

Coda Records will market the underdub session as a "lost" Archies

album 100 years hence. Due to illness, Archie will neither take

part in these dates nor the Laura Nyro TV tribute; however, he'll

be back on stage in February of 2033 when The Archies make their

penultimate public appearance @ Riverdale's Awesome Venue.

The Archies' contract with Discos Fuentes comes to an end in

January of 2033. They'll claim ownership of the WHOLE WORLD

SHAKIN' album and the master will reside in their archives.

Upon completion, so will these overdubs, four of which

are unfinished Archie Record tracks from the year 2007.
Others hail from archival sessions tracked in Hawaii in 2029.

The Archies will license them to Fuentes for inclusion on

a belated swansong LP that will only be marketed in Australia.

These overdub dates reunite the band with long-ago substitute

member Andy Yoshida. "A-Yo" is now one-half of an up-and-

coming production team "down under". He'll have requested

a chance to produce The Archies before they disband. Kevin

Keller takes the lead on the first two unfinished titles, and

Toni Topaz (now an official member of the band) holds forth

on the next two. At Archie's request, two additional sides are

committed to tape: Roni tracks a searing version of "Baby,

It's You" - one of the gutsiest vocal performances she'll ever

track - and he growls through "Let Me Bring You Up", a

long-forgotten song leftover from the Kirshner Records

era. Released as a single in 2035, a live version will storm the

dance charts three decades later! This is the group's last

official recording date, but a few more sessions will be

logged under their name.

The Archies' final TV appearances will be two hour-long
specials for PBS and MTV, respectively. The former is taped
live in Austin, Texas in December of 2032, and the latter is pre-
recorded in May of 2033 at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church
in Staten Island, New York. A pair of DVD releases are

scheduled but cancelled in favor of the Adiós Amigos
documentary (see below). After the runaway success of that film,

interest in The Archies wanes for a few years; but in 2037,

a hit biopic heats up the market for new product. A video

download for "Archie Unplugged" finally appears in 2038.

Audio from The Archies' 2032 Farewell World Tour

will be recorded by "Spanish" Eddie Roxchild. Under

the supervision of movie director Raj Patel, it will

be remixed by Eddie's husband Ralfi Chingas (The

Archies' longtime producer). Inexplicably, those remix

sessions won't be documented but Ralfi's sound mix will be

heard in Patel's smash-hit film documentary

of the tour. At Archie and Veronica's request,

Eddie compiles a tape of what he feels are the

band's best live performances. His compilation

tape provides source material for this second round

of remixes. While Juggy, Betty and Veronica all cut

successful vocal overdubs at these sessions,

Archie's performance of "The Grass Will Sing

For You" won't appear on the live album;

after several frustrating attempts, he gives up

on trying to improve the show-stopping ballad

and decides to omit it. The rest of the band

strongly objects, but Arch has the final say!

This session and the previous one produce sound mixes
that will appear on the triple-vinyl "soundtrack" album for
¡Adiós Amigos! Ralfi Chingas' movie mixes won't be

released until the year 2121, when Discos Fuentes

finally markets the real soundtrack; it will be

titled SAY GOODBYE TO RIVERDALE. That ultra-long-

playing album will include first-time remixes of six

previously unissued live recordings: "I'm Your Vehicle,"

"Speedy González," "Suspicious Minds," "Sayonara,

Baby," "Land Of Milk And Honey" and "Archie's

Dance Medley." Simultaneous to this record date,

The Archies will hold their final business meetings.

The group will officially disband in Bora Bora

on July 24, 2033.
